Deaf Iowans Against Abuse Coordinator - Job Description
Assault Care Center Extending Shelter and Support (ACCESS) in Ames, Iowa is seeking applicants for the position of Deaf Iowans Against Abuse (DIAA) Coordinator. DIAA serves deaf and hard of hearing survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault across the state of Iowa, with a home base in Ames. The DIAA Coordinator will provide direct advocacy to survivors, technical assistance to member programs of the Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault and the Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence, education to professionals and service providers outside of this field, and outreach to the Deaf community. The DIAA Coordinator may also be required to provide Sexual Violence Prevention education.
Requirements:
- Fluency in American Sign Language (to be determined by qualified assessors)
- Clear understanding and knowledge about Deaf culture
- Empathy for survivors of domestic and sexual violence
- Ability to articulate (via ASL, verbally, and/or in writing) the needs of a survivor
- Knowledge of a deaf person's legal rights to accessibility under state and federal law
